Synonyms
RBC distribution width, red cell distribution width, red blood cell distribution width

Purpose
It is as a measure of the distribution of widths of RBC's in an individuals RBC population. If it is high for instance (i.e. there is a wide distribution of RBC widths in that RBC population) it signifies Fe deficiency. If it is in the normal range and the person is anaemic then the cause of the anaemia is most likely chronic disease, or thalassaemia.
